Welcome back to Saffron’s Cauldron!

March… brings to us the Vernal or Spring Equinox!
On March 20th we celebrate that one-day of the year when lightness and darkness become equals.

On this day we also celebrate the festival of Ostara. It is believed by many that Ostara was named after the Goddess Eostre. It is said that at this time of year Eostre took the form of a rabbit and roamed about restoring the fertility of the Earth and all her creatures. It is believed by many that the earliest beginnings of the Easter Bunny come from the ancient tales of Eostre. Interestingly enough Eostre is also where Christians derived the word Easter. While Christians break away from Pagan tradition by celebrating Easter on the first Sunday after the full moon and following the Spring Equinox, you will easily recognize many of the customs and traditions of Easter as Pagan in origin.

One unusual tradition at Ostara was the making of “hot crossed buns”. Hot crossed buns were very significant to Pagans and were only made and eaten this one time of year. Just like the name suggests the buns were marked with a cross, generally made of icing. The cross or X made on the bun represented the four directions and the four phases of the moon and were considered very powerful. It is another tradition that Christians adapted and even in modern time British Christians still eat them on Good Friday.

A more common and widely practiced Christian tradition is that of giving “Easter Eggs”. This too is comes from a Pagan custom relating to the Spring Equinox, although the eggs in question were hen eggs not pretty colored eggs or chocolate ones like one might see at Easter today. For Pagans the giving of eggs symbolized the resurrection and continuing life. The egg would be dyed red to represent the resurrection of the Sun at the equinox. Christian quickly adopted this same tradition of coloring the egg red and for them it symbolized Christ’s blood. It was believed that giving a child a red egg would keep them healthy the year through. The egg being a symbol of fertility it was and still is a very powerful symbol associated with both Easter and the Spring Equinox.

With the Spring Equinox the air begins to fill with the essence of love and fertility. Birds will chirp a little more cheerily and new buds will push their way through the ground. It is certain that many will shake off their winter blues and venture out to gentle call of Spring and find a love of their own! With that in mind I have a special spell for you.

Ostara Passion Spell

Use this spell to increase your lustful feelings for your partner on this Sabbat, just as the young God and Goddess awaken to discover their own sexuality. Carve interlocking symbols representing your respective genders onto the candle’s side and anoint it with clove or cinnamon oil. Burn it in the bedroom when you want some passion play. Create a lust talisman by binding several lust-inducing herbs in a red cloth. Choose from the following: vanilla bean, ginger, bay leaf, ginseng, hibiscus, damiana, mint leaves, caraway seeds, garnets, and zircon.
Place the bundle under your bed and say:

By talisman and candle, this spell I cast,
Now our loving spirit embrace with passion and lust.

Blessings to you and yours!
